Regional issues and challenges in West Africa concerning the supply of hydrocarbons to Burkina Faso

Abstract

The supply of hydrocarbons in landlocked Burkina Faso depends mainly on its coastal neighbours and Niger. The Société Nationale Burkinabè d'Hydrocarbures (SONABHY) plays a central role in overseeing the import and storage of petroleum products. The aim of this study is to understand the challenges and issues associated with the supply of hydrocarbons. The research, based on semi-directive interviews with truck drivers involved in the supply of hydrocarbons to Burkina Faso, a survey of SONABHY transporters and documentary research, examines their preferences and the transport and logistics challenges they face. The study reveals that hauliers favour Togo for its quality infrastructure, but criticise Benin for its road hassles and high costs. The results also reveal a segmentation of products, influencing the profitability and choices of hauliers. Regional insecurity and poor infrastructure further complicate supply, increasing operational costs and delivery times.
