| dc.description.abstract | African traditional medicine systems encode a body of empirical pharmacological knowledge accumulated through centuries of systematic observation. Three specific epistemic practices — the ritual specification of herb harvest time, the pharmacological distinction between attached and naturally fallen leaves, and the therapeutic use of morphologically organ-resembling plants to treat pathologies of those organs — have been broadly dismissed as pre-scientific. This paper proposes, through convergent analysis of current literature in plant chronobiology, senescence metabolomics, and ethnopharmacology, that each of these practices reflects biologically defensible phenomena that modern biochemical science is only beginning to articulate. The specification of harvest time is shown to reflect circadian clock-regulated secondary metabolite oscillation documented across multiple medicinal species. The distinction between harvested and fallen leaves is grounded in jasmonic acid-driven senescence biochemistry, vacuolar metabolite activation, and developmental metabolic reprogramming. The morphological-therapeutic correlations of the Doctrine of Signatures are evaluated through a dissemination hypothesis framework and supported by converging pharmacological evidence. We argue that African traditional medicine constitutes an uncodified but empirically grounded pharmacological archive, and that the failure to decode it systematically represents one of the most significant outstanding gaps in global pharmaceutical science. A five-priority research agenda for African-centred chronopharmacognosy is proposed. | |
